Beating the Heat: Help Strays Survive Kolkata Summers
Kolkata’s summer temperatures regularly cross 40°C, making life incredibly difficult for street animals. A few simple actions can save lives.
Place Fresh Water Bowls
Keep clean earthenware bowls filled with water in shaded areas outside your house or shop. Refill them twice a day.
Provide Shaded Safe Havens
Allow stray dogs and cats to rest under the shade of your compound wall, shops, or parked cars during peak afternoon heat (12 PM - 4 PM).
Recognize Heatstroke Symptoms
Excessive panting, red gums, weakness, or vomiting are signs of heat distress. Wet their paws and tummy immediately with cool water.
Protect & Stabilize: Immunization & Animal Birth Control
Combining rabies immunization with sterilization is key to keeping stray populations healthy, stable, and peaceful in our neighborhoods.
Organize local drives
Contact local NGOs or municipal authorities to run regular anti-rabies vaccination (ARV) camps in your area.
Support Animal Birth Control (ABC)
Sterilization is the only court-mandated, humane method in India to manage stray dog populations. It curbs territorial behavior, mating-season aggression, and puppy mortality.
Understand the Law (ABC Rules)
Relocating street dogs is illegal under Indian law. Dogs must be caught by certified handlers, sterilized/vaccinated by local bodies/NGOs, and released back into the exact same locality.

Quick NGO contacts
If you’ve found an injured stray, reach out to an NGO for guidance and rescue help.

Understanding Our Platform's Purpose
Hope aims to bridge the gap between animal caretakers and help networks. However, digital tools have limits. If the animal's condition is serious, immediate physical veterinary care is critical.
Locator Service Only
Hope assists you in finding nearby registered animal welfare NGOs. We do not dispatch rescue squads or have direct control over NGO response times.
AI Guidance Scope
Chatbot answers are generated by AI to offer general first-aid guidance. They do not constitute formal veterinary diagnoses or prescriptions.
Seek Professional Vet Care
For severe trauma, active bleeding, toxicity, or listlessness, please immediately transport the animal to the nearest vet clinic or hospital.
